THE IMP3ALA PROJECT
 | To summarize:
The Imp3ala Project is on-going study spear-headed and funded by Dick Phitzwell to
determine the feasibility of a mobile MP3 player. With the help of Thumb-Tack, his
midget assistant, he's created a 4GB trunk mounted (thanks to Thumb-Tack's small stature),
mobile MP3 player, code named "The PlayerTech 3000 Mobile Trunk Mounted MP3 Player"
|
|

Car:
A 1973 Chevy Impala, unofficially known as the pImpala (when the wheels is on).
Details:
The player itself is Gateway3000 Pentium 133 MegaHurts PC with a 4GB
hard drive and 16MegaBites of RAM running Windows95. A cheap-ass (onsale.com) sound card ($12.00, 16Bits)
and Network Card (100Mbps $40.00). The network card
allows me to encode and download MP3's at work and then run a twisted pair cable
out of my window into the parking lot to download them without removing the PC from the
trunk. The
mp3 player is WinAmp and it's shortcut is placed in the start-up folder with a
command line option to open my playa' list. I chose WinAmp because of it's
numerous short cut keys (no mouse or monitor on board). Power is supplied via a
Radio
Shack Power inverter ($119.00) and extension cord. Output from the sound card is sent via a
Radio Shack Cassette adapter($20.00) and headphone extension cable. I have
an old-school tape deck with no RCA inputs so the adapter was necessary. If you
have something with RCA inputs, do not use this adapter, get a Radio Shack
minature stereo to 2 RCA jack cable and plug it right into the stereo. The Keyboard is
placed under the front seat and utilizes an extension cable to reach the
trunk.
